About Antique & Vintage Plastics; Bakelite, Celluloid and Lucite

Vintage Bakelite Jewelry plus all Antique and Vintage Plastics including Celluloid and Lucite, Bakelite Kitchenware, Flatware, Utensils and Collectibles are increasingly more in demand and growing steadily each year since more and more are being collected by all generations.

Vintage Plastics including Celluloid and Lucite have gained such significant respect where they are exhibited in Collections in Museums today such as the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum.

Plastics such as Bakelite were primarily made to provide the public with less expensive items especially during the hardships of World War II. Incredibly Plastics have been around since the 1800's!

Celluloid was invented by John Wesley Hyatt in 1869 and was widely used in 1890-1917 all through the Victorian Era, Art Nouveau and parts of the Art Deco Period. Because Celluloid is highly flammable, manufacturing after a limited time was discontinued until safer plastics were introduced, making Vintage and Antique Celluloid Jewelry highly collectible today.

Bakelite on the other hand is unmeltable. It is an early Polymeric Plastic made from a Phenol Formaldehyde Resin invented by Leo Hendrik Baekeland in 1907 while he was trying to invent a varnish.

Many people don't realize how many objects in their home when they were growing up were actually made from Bakelite and Lucite. Kitchen Clocks, That Plastic Radio that played all the time, Egg Beaters, Ice Cream Scoopers, The Tops of Sugar Shakers, Can Openers, Pot Handles and so much more were made from Bakelite and Lucite. The Marriage of Bakelite and Lucite showed itself in Two-tone Flatware and Costume Jewelry and is not limited to solids only. A variety of Patterns such as Checkerboards, Dots, Animals, Pearlized Designs, End-Of-Day in a vast array of colors were produced. If you can, have a look around Grandma's or Mom's Kitchen. I bet you'll find some wonderful collectible Bakelite that you never noticed before.

Always buy what you like and be creative with all Vintage Plastics. A table set with Bakelite Utensils and Flatware looks fabulously eclectic with a combination of Bakelite styles and colors. Display your Bakelite, Celluloid, Lucite Brooches and Jewelry in a Lucite Box in your living room as a conversation piece. And Buy from reputable and knowledgeable dealers.

How To: Cleaning your Vintage Costume Jewelry

The tools I like to use to clean costume jewelry are: a baby toothbrush (these have very soft bristles), wooden toothpicks, cotton swabs, a hair-dryer, and towels.

The safest route is the driest method. Start with the dry baby toothbrush to brush the piece off. If the face of the rhinestones have fingerprints, or smudges, use a cotton-tip swab with a bit of solution on the tip.

I use a very mild solution of ivory liquid soap in water. Just gently work the top of the rhinestones or glass. The biggest enemy to foiled rhinestones is moisture. If you soak the rhinestones, the foiling may become damaged, leaving your rhinestones "dead" or, if they are glued it may dissolve the glue.

Be careful when cleaning around enameling – some older enameling may come off with too aggressive cleaning. And be aware that some colorful artglass is actually a film coating over glass, that might come off with any soaking or aggressive cleaning.

Toothpicks are good for small areas where pockets of encrusted stuff may lodge. Wooden toothpicks will not scratch glass if you slip as you work the matter loose.

On the base metals of your pieces, work the baby toothbrush with a bit of solution in a gentle manner. When finished, lay your piece on the paper towel, and completely dry with the hair dryer on a cool setting.

Bakelite Jewelry - The Real Thing

The Art Deco period began with the end of the Art Nouveau period in approximately 1909 and continued through the early 1940's. The most accessible and collectible jewelry of the Deco era was "plastic." The word "plastic" and "jewelry" do not seem to go together for many people, but they do if you are an avid collector of Deco jewelry - in Bakelite - the colorful fun jewelry that is so fashionable to wear. This is the ultimate in costume jewelry - it is worn completely for effect, to enhance the "costume." Rather than being spurned as it was for many years, it is worn today in the spirit of colorful fun for which it was intended. In addition, when searching for Bakelite jewelry, one can find some real examples of great design work in the harder-to-find pieces that have made their happy way to the collectible's market.

Bakelite, a Phenolic Resin, was cast into tubes, rods and carved sheets by machinists and was invented by Dr. Leo Bakeland, for which he obtained a patent on July 13, 1907. The demand for it and its uses in household items, games, toys, electrical insulators and of course jewelry, made this product an instant success. It was intended for the masses. Most Bakelite production ceased in 1942.

Bakelite jewelry was sold in the 30's and early 40's in US department stores such as Sears, Saks, B. Altmans and Bonwit Tellers. Notable designers such as Van Cleef and Arpel, Channel and Lalique even designed items using the material. These were the times of the depression and the bright and durable Bakelite items were an instant hit with all - with a wonderful array of colors. The Queen may not have worn Bakelite at the time, but in a recent TV program, the Royal Yacht Britannia had furnishings that had Bakelite trim.

While "copying" is the best form of flattery, we are dismayed that there is a "cottage industry" that has been created with the production of "fakelite" - jewelry that is manufactured in different parts of the world, giving the appearance of being Bakelite. On close examination, to the trained eye, these items are not vintage Bakelite. We are also aware that these items have been "treated" in such as way that they may pass the "Bakelite test" (true Bakelite when run under very hot water will yield a strong smell and most pieces, when rubbed with 409 household cleaner will turn a q-tip yellowish). If one is searching for and collecting vintage Bakelite, be wary of these "Fakelite" reproductions that are in the market today and we recommend that true authentic vintage Bakelite be purchased only from a reputable, experienced dealer - hopefully when you visit Evelynne's Oldies But Goodies!! Feel free to ask questions of any vintage Bakelite dealer regarding an item and enjoy the thrill of collecting vintage Bakelite!

We are pleased to offer for sale, at our site on Ruby Lane, Evelynne's Oldies But Goodies, authentic original vintage Bakelite jewelry such as bracelets, pins, buttons and household items that have endured in prime condition. These items will bring one pleasure and allow one to be creative in the amount of Bakelite worn and the wonderful colors that are combined! Original vintage Bakelite will only appreciate in value!

Christian Jewelry

Christian jewelry items will make great gifts for your loved ones because they are a constant reminder of your support and their most basic and integral life beliefs. These gifts are very important to the identities of young people and those who are older as well. When considering a gift of christian jewelry think about the following types and select the one most appropriate to your situation.

Necklaces. Necklaces make perfect gifts for young children and teenagers. Boys and girls alike will appreciate christian jewelry as a gift since it shows that you are supportive of them and their beliefs. Necklaces can be simple in design ensuring your child will like the style of the jewelry item.

Bracelets. Christian jewelry given in the form of a bracelet also sends a powerful message. Girls and women of all ages usually like to wear bracelets of a variety of styles. If you already know your special someone has a necklace or a ring, a bracelet can complete their already established collection. Bracelets can sometimes be lost though, so make sure you order the correct size for young children.

Rings. Likewise, rings are good gifts for individuals who already have necklaces and bracelets. Rings can be very sentimental items and treasured for years to come. Rings are also nice religious gifts because they constantly stay in the wearer’s eyesight. When it comes to reminders of faith and support, they will be constant throughout their days.

Gifts of christian jewelry are special gifts since they have meaning beyond their materialistic being. Make the most of giving these gifts by thinking about the recipient and deciding which jewelry type would fit him or her needs best.

Butterfly Jewelry

Add an Airy Feel to Your Wardrobe with Butterfly Jewelry and Accessories

Butterflies have the effect of lightening moods and giving both areas and attitudes a feather-light, Spring-y feel. Add a touch of whimsy to your wardrobe by accessorizing with butterfly jewelry, hair accessories and other items.

Butterfly jewelry comes in all shapes, sizes and colors. Lighten up a conservative black dress with a brightly-colored butterfly pendant and earrings or make your soft, pastel sweater stand out with an elegant butterfly necklace. You can even wear butterflies in your hair! Butterfly hair clips add just a touch of sparkle to your hair, and some butterfly barrettes even have wings that flutter in the breeze! Other butterfly accessories and jewelry can include rings, ankle bracelets and body jewelry.

Butterfly jewelry is appropriate for all ages, whether you dress in overalls or business attire. Butterflies can lend a feeling of ease to an otherwise hum-drum business suit. A small necklace or bracelet adorned with the graceful creatures softens the look. If you want to get more creative with your accessories, clip some butterfly hair accessories onto your shoes for some added interest or a colorful butterfly brooch to your lapel or scarf. You’ll be amazed by how approachable you become to both clients and employers and at the difference a few little pieces of jewelry can make!

utterfly jewelry can make your business attire seem less severe and can add a pretty, whimsical feel to your casual clothing. Choose bejeweled brooches, bracelets and necklaces to jazz up jeans and tees or go for an understated yet airy pair of earrings or an anklet to liven up dull business wear.

Bead Jewelry

Add a Touch of Trendy To Your Outfits With Beads!

Beads are the perfect way to add some sparkle, movement and personality to any outfit, and bead jewelry is a great accent when you don’t want to go overboard. A simple strand of beads can liven up otherwise drab colors or add an eclectic feel to a perfectly put-together ensemble.

Bead jewelry can be anything, from a conservative strand of pearls to a funky, flower child-inspired chokers, bracelet or anklet. Go for a Southwestern feel with multi-stranded turquoise bead jewelry or make a laid-back, beachy statement with an assortment of seashells and coral. You can even get creative and string your own bead jewelry with everything from seed beads to sea shells to rhinestones.

Bead jewelry is often inexpensive and is a great way to add a touch of hand-crafted originality to you everyday duds. Some bead jewelry can get expensive, especially when made with Austrian crystal of Czech glass beads. These beaded creations are often elegant and intended to add unobtrusive sparkle, dress them up for a cocktail party or dress them down with your favorite scoop-neck tee and denim.

Native American bead jewelry is also a beautiful option. The beads are usually woven into thicker rows for items such chokers and bracelets, rather than the free-form style of stranded necklaces. Featuring Native American designs, these pieces are usually made by hand and each one is a little different. These pieces can be bought through retailers in any region with a strong Native American flavor, such as the Southwest, although you may have a chance to meet the weaver and have your own piece custom-made if you visit a reservation or Native American store.

Whether you prefer delicate crystal, symbolic Native American woven pieces or just a simple strand of your own creation, bead jewelry is a great way to make a statement.

How to pick antique Jewelry

Antique Jewelry Can Take Any Outfit From So-So to Sophisticated

The season’s fashion musts range from soft, silky pastels to sturdy tweed in a rainbow of bright colors, a piece of antique jewelry can make any outfit look fabulous. A stunning brooch or delicate filigreed necklace can add a touch of class to everything from that perfect little black dress to a comfortable denim jacket. Unlike the mass produced jewelry of today, antique jewelry often features hand crafted one-of-a-kind pieces, and adding few of these special pieces to your collection is usually just as simple as visiting a flea market or antique shop.

Brooches are a classic example of antique jewelry at its finest, often featuring intricate designs in a wide variety of shimmering stones. Although once used to fasten a lady’s cloak, these pieces are now widely used as sparkling lapel pins and even as decoration on funky hats or jeans. Brooches can range anywhere from inexpensive to very expensive, depending on the designer, the stones, and the detail of the setting. Look to antique stores for great finds. An inexpensive and worn looking piece can be a real find once it is properly cleaned and polished.

Rings are amazing pieces of antique jewelry, each with a history all its own. More and more couples are choosing antique settings or rings for wedding sets. Most are unique and unlikely to have been replicated anywhere, a one-of-a-kind ring for the one and only love of your life. These antique pieces come in innumerable sizes, shapes and stones, and can sell for next to nothing or be quite expensive. Antique stores and flea markets may offer a treasure from time to time, but a jeweler’s expertise is definitely the way to go, especially when it comes to appraisal.

Antique earrings, bracelets and necklaces also come in a wide variety of styles. From delicate and understated elegance to almost over-the-top costume creations, these antique pieces can serve as the focal point of any ensemble. Add a simple rhinestone necklace and earrings for elegant evening attire, or throw on some sizeable sparkle to make that everyday outfit pop. Good costume jewelry can be expensive, but antique store finds are perfect for adding maximum shine of a budget.

Antique jewelry is the perfect way to make any outfit special. Add a touch of old-time charm to an up to the minute ensemble for a unique look that’s all your own!

Millefiori from Murano

Millefiori Glass products come from the port town of Murano, Italy, just outside Venice. The Murano Glass blowers have been making high quality glass products in 1291. There was a long time in world history when the only glass makers in the world who knew the secret to making a mirror worked and lived in Murano Italy.
Our Millefiori Pendants, Millefiori Rings and Millefiori Necklaces are all hand made in Murano Italy by the world renowned glass blower and artist Allan K.
All of our Millefiori products are guaranteed to be hand made and guaranteed to be authentic.

Millefiori is a specific type of Murano Glass. Millefiori translate into English as a 1,000 Flowers. To create Millefiori artists melt together long strands of brightly-colored glass into a rod, and then cut the rod in thin slices and embed it into glass. The effect that is created appears to be flowers in the glass. If you like fine craftsmanship, you will love our Millefiori Jewelry.

Titanium Jewelry

Ounce-for-ounce titanium is strongest material known to man, it is stronger than steel and 42% lighter. In addition to its’ superior strength titanium is 100% hypoallergenic. This amazing metal is inert, thus it does not react to salt water, sun light or body chemistry.

Titanium jewelry, though difficult to make, is strong and beautiful. Titanium is quickly becoming the metal of choice for men’s wedding bands. A titanium Ring, that is nearly impossible to scratch or dent, is what every mans-man needs.

Some people think that Titanium was only recently discovered but it has been around since the end of the 18th century. Titanium only recently made its way from aircraft and space ships to be used as jewelry. Now that the worlds strongest metal has gotten a fashion sense, we are offering them at very reasonable pieces on zulu moon. If you are looking for a titanium ring or titanium bracelet you will find a nice selection on our website.

Silver Jewelry

Because silver jewelry is so inexpensive it is very affordable to a lot of unique and varied designs, creating this many designs would be prohibitive to do with platinum or gold. The freedom to design without the fear of going into large debt allows then silver market to flourish around the world. When you couple silver with the cheap alternative to diamond, Cubic Zirconia, you really get some fantastic designs.

At Zulu Moon we strive to keep 8,000+ pieces (styles) of silver jewelry available at all times. This large inventory would be nearly impossible to afford if we specialized in any other precious metal. Lucky for us and our customers, Silver is very reasonable.

When buying silver jewelry, you typically are buying Sterling Silver. Sterling Silver is .925 parts silver and .75 parts of another metal. The reason silver jewelry is not “pure silver” is that silver is a very soft metal and it is easy to deform, scratch and dent. Thus the addition of harder metals such as nickel allows sterling silver jewelry to hold up well over time.

When you purchase Sterling Silver, look for the mark ‘925’, ‘ster’ or ‘sterling’ to determine is you purchased a good product. (if you really like the design and your hand body doesn't’t turn green you might not care if it sterling)

At Zulu Moon, we carry over 1,000 sterling silver rings. Most of these rings have gemstones or some other ornament. All of our gemstone silver jewelry is genuine unless otherwise stated in the product description.

Remember that we have a large selection of cubic zirconia engagement rings and mens rings including wedding bands.

How To Measure Your Finger for a Ring Size

Find a piece of string or strip of paper no wider than 3/4 inch. Wrap it around the base of the appropriate ring finger. Use a pen to mark the point on the string/paper where it overlaps, forming a complete circle. With a ruler with millimeters (mm), measure the length from the starting end of the string/paper to the pen mark. This is your ring size in millimeters. Now use the chart below to determine your ring size.
